Yay! I Fixed The Ending!
So, without further ado, this is the play I've been working on in my class
For some reason, people have been bugging me to post it
The Experiment
By Katie Carlson
Theater 6
Characters
Celeb: A young woman, about age 21. She was kidnapped from her home planet at a young age, held captive as an experiment in the labs on another planet, Ryuten. She has short black hair, silver eyes, and a long black tail.
Alec: A young man, about age 22. He’s one of the scientists on Ryuten, and the son of the ruler of the planet. He has black hair, blue eyes, and large redish orange wings. He wears a lab coat and glasses at all time.
Dr. Flare: Alec’s father, and another scientist. Looks like a slightly older version of Alec, but carries himself with more confidence and lacks glasses.
Situation: Alec is the new scientist assigned to work on Celeb, only to discover that she’s not quite as submissive as the other people he’s worked on.
(The scene opens to reveal a small prison like cell, containing one single woman. She’s currently working on some sort of diagram, and doesn’t even notice as the young scientist makes his way inside of her cell.)
Alec
(Comes up from behind her, pushing a cart with him, gently tapping her on her shoulders, to grab her attention.) Miss? I need to run some tests.
Celeb
(Doesn’t look up from what she’s doing) I could care less about what you need to do, or anyone else in this hellhole for that matter.
Alec
It’ll only take a few minutes…
Celeb
So? If I let you poke needles into me, everyone will think they can
Alec
You make it sound like we’re doing something wrong here.
Celeb
(Stops what she’s doing to turn her face up to look at him, glaring her eyes.) That’s because you are doing something wrong here. You’d have to be blind not to see that
Alec
(In a lame attempt to make a joke) Well, I am rather near sighted…
Celeb
(sneers) I can tell, what with those thick glasses you hide behind. Who are you anyways? You’ve never worked on me before. Don’t tell me someone tricked you into trading a better-behaved patient to work with me
Alec
No, my father assigned me to you…he said that a challenge might help toughen me up, or something like that. He said it would be good as one of my first lab experiments.
Celeb
Well that explains why I’ve never seen you around before. (laughs dryly) And who is your father, another power hungry idiot who’s trying to make his way up the social ladder here?
Alec
Not exactly…
Celeb
Oh really, then who is he, exactly? Must be some scientist or another, and a high ranking one to be able to assign you to someone like me
Alec
How do you know how things work here so well?
Celeb
I’ve been here since I was seven, and unlike most of the experiments, I actually pay attention to everything that’s going on, and not just what’s done to me. You still haven’t answered my question, Nerd-boy, who is your father? You wouldn’t of mentioned him if he wasn’t important.
Alec
It’s Dr. Flare
Celeb
(Backs away from him, looking even more disgusted with him then she had before) You’re that asshole’s son? I almost feel sorry for you.
Alec
And why is that…?
Celeb
Because you’re the son of a maniac, I mean, your childhood couldn’t of been a happy one with someone like him as a father.
Alec
(Shifts uncomfortably, but remains silent)
Celeb
Unless, you’re just like him, I bet you ar-
Alec
(Snaps at her angrily, cutting her off before she can finish her sentence) I am nothing like him!
Celeb
Then why are you working for him?
Alec
What choice do I have? He’ll kill me if I don’t.
Celeb
Is that why you’re doing this, to stay alive? Or is it some lame attempt to get Daddy’s attention?
Alec
Can we please just get this over with, I just have a few simple tests to run, and then I can leave you alone.
Celeb
(smirks) I got to you, didn’t I? You’re a lot more timid then most of the scientists here. You haven’t even tried to attack me yet. I’m almost impressed. Almost.
Alec
You’re not a people person, are you?
Celeb
(rolls her eyes) Gee, what gave you that idea?
Alec
Just a feeling. Can you please just let me work? I just need to take some blood and tissue samples, nothing major.
Celeb
Do I look like I care, you can stay in here all day, I’m not cooperating.
Alec
Well, he was definitely right about you being challenging
Celeb
Why am I challenging? Because I have a mind of my own, because I refuse to sit and let people do whatever they want to me?
Alec
You know, someday, that kind of attitude might get you in trouble.
Celeb
So?
Alec
It’s dangerous to be like that here, you could get yourself killed.
Celeb
Oh, and you’d really care if I did? Because I certainly don’t. My family, my race, everything I know is dead, there’s not a hell of a lot left that you could do to me. Yeah, I could be killed, but so what? I’m practically dead already, might as well make it permanent.
Alec
(Looks and sounds abashed) That’s such a dark outlook
Celeb
Well, my life hasn’t exactly been all sunshine and roses you know, what did you expect me to say? That there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, that every cloud has a silver lining? Because all of that is bullshit. It’s simply not true. For most people, there are no happy endings. There’s no prince here to rescue me, but I never wanted one.
Alec
I mean…most of the experiments here-
Celeb
Prisoners, call us what we all. We’re prisoners. We didn’t volunteer to be part of your experiments, don’t refer to us as such. It’s just plain rude.
Alec
Fine…Prisnoners. Anyways, most of you seem to have some sort of hope, or something, but you’re just so…bitter.
Celeb
I’m not bitter; I’m realistic. I’d like to get free, and I’ll certainly try, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. I mean, most likely, any attempts will end up failures. But that’s life. But I’d rather die trying to do things on my own then waiting for someone to do it for me.
Alec
I see…can I get on with the testing now? I have other people and things I need to do today, I can’t spend my whole day talking to you, despite how…er…interesting it is. I need to get this done with.
Celeb
Then leave, go on to see your other prisoners, you’re not going to get very far with me.
Alec
(Sighs softly) Are you always so difficult?
Celeb
(smirks and nods her head) Why yes, yes I am.
Alec
(Mutters under his breath) No wonder they keep you in solitary confinement.
Celeb
(Eyes narrow) What was that?
Alec
(Repeats himself, louder now) No wonder they keep you in solitary confinement, you would probably scare off any of the other experiments
Celeb
(Voice raises) I told you not to call them that! They’re people, not lab rats! And personally, I don’t care that I’m kept by myself anyways. I like being on my own. I don’t need other people.
Alec
Somehow, I doubt that
Celeb
And why is that?
Alec
Because everyone needs other people. You, me, everyone. It’s the nature of all beings. No one likes being alone all the time
Celeb
Can we just get this over with already?
Alec
(Blinks in confusion) Wait, I thought you didn’t want me to do the tests, why the sudden change of mind.
Celeb
Because you’re not going to leave until you do them, so I might as well get them out of the way, so you can get out of here.
Alec
Do you really dislike me that much?
Celeb
I dislike everyone that much Nerd-boy, don’t feel special or anything like that. Because you’re not. You’re the same scum like everyone else who works in this place. No worse, no better. The only one here that was ever worth talking to was Endymion.
Alec
(Looks confused) Endymion?
Celeb
I guess you would of known him as Dr. Shields, if at all.
Alec
And what was so great about him?
Celeb
Unlike the rest of the scientists here, he thought for himself. He wasn’t afraid to risk his own safety to fight what he knew was wrong. He knew that it was wrong to take people from their homes, and in some cases, destroy their races, just to use them as prototypes. Test subjects to find out which of your drugs and steroids work best. Or in “special” cases like me, try to turn us into drugged controlled fighting machines. He opened my eyes, and that of a few of the other experiments as well.
Alec
(Readjusts his glasses, looking both curious and nervous at the same time) What happened to him?
Celeb
(Shrugs) I don’t know. He disappeared. I guess he was killed or something. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was. That’s what happens when you fight the system here. But at least he had the courage to do so, even though he knew the odds were against him. (Sighs softly, looking down at her feet for a moment)
Alec
You were lying before
Celeb
(Her head snaps up almost immediately, glaring at him) And what the hell made you come to that conclusion?
Alec
You said you hate everyone, but just from listening to you talk about this Endymion guy, I know it isn’t true. It sounded like you almost lov-
Celeb
Don’t even say it! I did not love him. I respected him. There is a huge difference between liking someone and respecting someone. And I certainly was not in love with him.
Alec
(Sighs softly, deciding to let it drop) Sorry, sorry. I shouldn’t have even mentioned such a crazy idea in the first place. Obviously, I misinterpreted you.
Celeb
Damn right you did. So why do you need these samples anyways?
Alec
Why do you ask?
Celeb
Because I’m not about to allow you to just stick a bunch of needles into me and remove Goddess knows what, and not even know why. Is that a problem?
Alec
No…Of course not! It’s just that most of the experi- I mean, prisoners, here never seem to ask.
Celeb
In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not like the other prisoners here.
Alec
That’s for sure
Celeb
(smirks) I’m going to choose to take that as a compliment
Alec
Take it however you want. Anyways, the reason I want to get the blood and tissue samples from you because we have to see how your body is handling and absorbing the adjustments made through the experiments. You just went through another procedure the other day, did you not?
Celeb
Yeah. I did. So what?
Alec
We need to make sure there’s no complications or anything like that. We wouldn’t want you to get sick because we didn’t follow through on things properly.
Celeb
(Sneers) Yeah, because then I could die and you found have to find someone else to use as your guinea pig
Alec
(Deciding to ignore it this time, rolling his eyes) Can I just get to my work already? I’m going to get in trouble as it is for taking so long with you. This shouldn’t of taken more than a few minutes, at the most.
Celeb
Fine, fine, get it over with already, you big baby. (Pulls up the sleeve of her shirt)
Alec
(Mutters under his breath) Finally (Fishes into the cart he had pushed into the lab with him, pulling out a large syringe and an alcohol swab. He cleaned an area on her elbow, and then felt around, obviously trying to find a vein.) Most of your veins are already broken…this does not make this an easy task to complete. Not at all. (Frowns, continuing to feel around her arm) Nothing yet.. (Suddenly lets out a triumphant sort of yelp) I found one!
Celeb
You don’t have to sound so happy about it, you know.
Alec
(Clears his throat uncomfortably) Er…sorry. Anyways, I guess I can continue now. (He carefully sticks the needle into her arm, drawing blood from it)
Dr. Flare
(Enters the cell, looking highly annoyed, though speaking in a calm, creepingly pleasant voice) Alec…I thought you would have been done a long time ago. You do have other experiments to see.
Celeb
(Wrenches away from Alec as soon as his father comes into the room, causing the syringe to fall on the floor, spluttering blood everywhere)
Dr. Flare
Now, now Celeb, dear, I’ve told you time and time again that it’ll only make things harder on you if you struggle like this
Celeb
Like I’m scare of anything you could do to me? Try your worst
Dr. Flare
(Raises a hand, rubbing her cheek with a strange gentleness) Careful girl, one of these days, I just might take you up on that offer. And I doubt you would be as able to handle it as you think you would be (Switches his attention back over to Alec, dropping his hand once more) Be careful around this one boy, don’t let her pull you in. Besides, I claimed her for myself a long time ago
Alec
I..see
Dr. Flare
Come with me Alec, I’ll send someone else to come clean up this mess. Obviously, I’ll have to watch the rest of you rounds to make sure you don’t fall any more behind
Alec
(As they walk away, he mouths something to Celeb) Goodbye
Celeb
(Mouths something back to him) Fuck you
(Dr. Flare and Alec both exit the stage)
Celeb
(Sighs softly, sinking down to the floor, not even paying attention to the blood, or the glass. She pulls out the diagram she had been working on before and goes back to it, almost as if nothing had ever even happened) I have to find a way…I have to find a way out! Away from those psychos… Still, he was sort of different from his father. Annoying as hell, but different. But…I mean, I didn’t like him…I don’t like anyone. Nor do I need anyone… I’ve always been on my own, and that’s enough, isn’t it? Isn’t it?! (Sighs softly, laying her head on her knees) Then why do I feel so alone? His patheticness must of rubbed off on me, or something (Laughs hollowly) Yeah, that must have been what happened…
(Lights fade out, focusing on her face for a moment before going completely dark)
