+_+ Utena rambling = go

You know, it always strikes me as funny when people claim Touga and Saionji aren't very good friends. It's true, Touga does manipulate and use Saionji worse than almost anyone in the series (save maybe Nanami) but at the same time, Saionji is the first person he runs to when he's upset. You see his mask drop the most when he's with Saionji. Which is saying something. Touga is an actor, in almost every since of the word, but Saionji is the one he can be truest with. And even then, there's alot of lies and deceit. But Saionji is aware of this. He calls Touga on his shit time and time again, something you see few others doing.

Not to mention the fact that Saionji is Touga's rosebride. Now, let's think about this. The rosebrides all seem to be people who are vital to the fighter. Miki's was Kozue, his beloved sister. Juri's was Shiori, who is very obviously the most important person to her. So what does that say about Touga's feelings for Saionji? They have to be very strong. I think there is alot of truth to the statement he keeps saying over and over again, that Saionji is his only friend. Of the duelists, Saionji is the first that he takes to Akio. Saionji is the one at his side when he tries to stop Utena. He obviously trusts the man alot.

And it's made very clear that Touga is very important to Saionji, in many different ways. On the one hand, he still sees good in Touga, because he remembers how Touga was before they found the girl in the coffin. He wants that friendship again. His greatest wish is for an everlasting friendship with Touga. But he also wants to prove himself to Touga, to prove he's better than him. I honestly think his attachment to Anthy came more to what she represented to him then her as a person. She was a means to finally best Touga.

And when the series ends, they're seen together, practicing Kendo like they always did. And to me it always felt like those ending shots were supposed to show where each of the people belonged. And it was Touga, Saionji and Nanami all together. Nanami off to the side, making them tea as they competed. Though they had had their own goals and aspirations, in the end their place was together. And I'm not even saying this from a shipping standpoint, though I do think if done right, they would have a very interesting dynamic. But it's made very obvious that no matter how you look at it, the two are very important figures in each other lives.
